jmdonovan@hotmail.com“Amidst all of the attention given to the sciences as to how they can lead to the cure of all diseases and daily problems of mankind, I believe that the biggest breakthrough will be the realization that the arts, which are considered conventionally “useless”, will be recognized as the whole reason why we ever try to live longer or live more prosperously. The arts are the science of enjoying life.”
--Muriel Cooper, professor of media arts and sciences at the Media Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Updated often several times a week. Check back as often if your life really is so pathetic.
Student currently at the College for Creative Studies. I’ll be starting my fifth year the Winter (January) 2005 semester, though due to scheduling conflicts I won’t be finished until December 2005.
I DJ Detroit and Dutch style electro-disko, a little italodisco and bootytech. I currently am on the lookout for:
V/A - Powerslaves: An elektro tribute to Iron Maiden 2xLP
Automat - Droid LP
Space - Magic Fly 12"
Immortals - Ultimate Warlord 12"
Cynthia Stern & Tobias Von Hofsten - I Love My 808 12"
Ferrara - Love Attack 12"
Ego - Theme from ET 12"
Scotch - Penguin’s Invasion 12"
Pink(not the pop star singer) - Sometimes 12"
Fred Wesley and the JBs - Damn Right I am Somebody LP
Industrial Bass Machine (aka IBM) - Devastate the Planet 12"
Cyberian Knights - This is the Sound of Underground 12"
Doctor Break - Sad Computer (Frustrated Dialog) (12"?)
If you have any of these in good condition and want to sell, send me an email. Thanks. I am also interested in late 70s-early 80s synthwave stuff like Flo & Andrew and Solid Space, but more to trade CD-Rs, as I really can't afford to drop $100-200 a piece on rare original vinyl like that. Some collector should do some bootleg comps of that stuff, like in the ethic of the Bloodstains across.../Teenage Shutdown!/Back from the Grave/Killed by Death compilation records. Come to think of it, someone should do that for privately pressed underground metal records from the 70s and 80s as well...
I also have my own music thing going which is in line with the italo/electro/bass genres. Currently I have about 100+ tracks (at last count) started, but only about 5-8 are worthy to go out. My demo project is worked on here and there because school takes up a lot of my time (or is it the other way around?). UPDATE: "Schedule One" demo out summer 2005 (or whenever I get around to it), as well as possible gigs (there have been some informal talks...).
Sound: Some of this stuff I haven't listened to for years (especially the punk and metal stuff), but was so influential it still deserves a mention--
PUNK/HARDCORE: Damnation A.D., Thoughts of Ionesco, Starkweather, Black Flag, Misfits, Integrity, The Freeze, Gang Green, Negative Approach, Agent Orange, Poison Idea, Rudimentary Peni, Samhain...
METAL: Carcass, Vader, Slayer, Eisenvater, Pentagram, Solefald, Satyricon, Darkthrone, (pre-1983) Motley Crue, Hellhamer/Celtic Frost, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Pan-Thy-Monium, Godflesh, Rammstein...
ELECTRONIX: Rude 66, Anthony Rother, I-f, Legowelt, Alden Tyrell, Orgue Electronique, It & My Computer, Raymond Scott, Fad Gadget, Aphex Twin...
PROG: Klaus Shultze, Tangerine Dream, ELP, Gentle Giant, King Crimson (the usual heavy hitters)
GOTH??: (pre-1986) Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Kommunity FK, Die Form, Requiem in White, Mors Syphlitica...
NEOFOLK (aka Nazis with acoustic guitars): In Gowan Ring, Death in June, Strength through Joy, Current 93, Ostara, Sol Invictus, Darkwood, Changes (the typical stuff of this genre)...
UNCLASSIFIABLE/EVERYTHING ELSE: Neurosis, Einsturzende Neubauten, Chrome/Helios Creed, Savage Republic, Coil, Brighter Death Now, Caspar Brotzmann Massaker, (pre-90s) Cocteau Twins, (pre-90s) Pet Shop Boys, Hanzel und Gretyl, Pink Floyd, Bjork, Blue Cheer, Richard Thompson, Marvin Gaye, Trans Am, Throbbing Gristle...
I'm not going to even try to make this list even marginally complete...
Consumption:
THE ETHNIC: Usually spicy hot (vegetarian) foods: Mexican, Thai
THE OTHERS: Morningstar Farms Soy-protein products: Tomato & Basil Pizza Burger, Chik’n Patty, Chik’n Nuggets. I am not very picky about brands-- BocaBurger is good too. Just as long as it isn't the Burger King veggie burger. You can't speed-flamegrill a veggie patty-- burned on the outside, raw on the inside.
THE LOWBROW: Taco Bell, Blimpie (mourning the loss of the ChikMax), Ricky's Sub Shop (Dearborn's, and probably one of Detroit's, best sub shops; privately run by a great guy)
THE VERY LOWBROW: Cheddar Jack/Hot n' Spicy Cheez-Its, Flamin' Hot Cheetos
I haven't eaten meat or meat byproducts (intentionally) since June of 1995. And no, I couldn’t care less if you choose not to do so.
Libation:
NON-ALCOHOL:orange Juice (especially if freshly juiced), Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness, cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, water, Mountain Dew Code Red, Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
LIVER TERRORISTS: Red Bull Vodka, Cranberry Vodka, Screwdriver/Vanilla Screwdriver, well-aged merlot, Heineken Dark, Newcastle, Woodchuck Dark & Dry, Hacker-Pschorr Weiser and more generally Lagers and Ales (especially if darker) and Stouts (more the sweeter variety). Gila Monster Amber Lager was a nice recent find, especially at $5 a six-pack.
If Budweiser is "America's beer", I'll move to Holland or Germany (which I'd probably do anyway). If America is so obsessed with disgustingly big=better, why is American beer so piss-poor and lightweight?
Because I drink alcohol, the whole notion of definitional vegetarianism is not something I could truly apply to myself (but if fish-eaters call themselves veggies...).
Celluloid:
DIRECTORS: David Lynch, Dario Argento, Alfred Hitchcock, Mario Bava, Jess Franco, John Waters.
INDIVIDUAL FILMS: Mulholland Dr., Blue Velvet, Vampyros Lesbos, A Virgin among the Living Dead, Blood Feast, Mantis in Lace, Blood for Dracula, Flesh for Frankenstein, American Psycho, Hellraiser, Carnival of Souls, Lolita (1961, though the newer one with Jeremy Irons is good too), Requiem for a Dream, Tenebre, American Beauty, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Psycho, Vertigo, Baraka, The Devils (still waiting for a DVD release of this classic), Clockwork Orange and the list goes on and on and...
Letterbox, not full-screen.
Subtitles, not dialog dubbed.
Shelter:
I really, really prefer to live in older houses with radiator heating. I love the fizzing/gurgling/whistling sound they make. It puts me right in the aura of Fall/Winter to hear this.
It is a dream of mine to design and build a house for myself. I love the Farnsworth house and would strongly consider borrowing elements from this structure. I am extremely enamored of early (20s/30s) and mid-century modernism.
Transport:
I would prefer to drive a manual transmission on every car I own in the future, even if I mostly drove in city traffic. Small, fast manual trans imports are the best, even if they are compacts.I can make my 1989 Mazda 323 peel out! it now peels out for the Lord...
I used to think Italian sportscars were cheesy (especially with all the dorks who drooled over them in the 80s) but I have to admit, some of the Lamborghinis and Maseratis from the 70s are pretty cool and designed to a high degree of technology and user consideration. The 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo is slick. "Smoking on a cigarette/listening to his car-cassette/cruising with his heart's playmate/in his Porche 928".
I dislike SUVs, but even moreso I dislike the egoistic "I own the road, what are you going to do about it?" attitude that driving such a vehicle seems to engender.
Image:
I entirely believe my reason for existence (as dumb as this may sound) is artistic expression. It is completely what I live for. If I had lots of money the first thing I would do is spend money for materials to help me better express myself. Some people would buy nice cars, a house or take a trip, etc... I like those things too, but before any of them I would purchase musical gear (especially), computer gear, photo gear and art supplies. Leaving behind artifacts of my time spent is very important to me. I am very happy I have realized this, at a point I feel is rather early in life for such a thing.
